City continues push to demolish eye sores

The West Frankfort City Council (WFCC) has been working with the Community Council (CC) in recent months to remove derelict and abandoned structures. The city government has been moving forward for some time toward this goal, but they got a boost recently from the CC when that organization jumped in with a helping hand.

In fact, Codes Officer Jerry Harkins refers to the Community Council as the “booster rocket” in this most recent project.

Previously, the CC had set aside $25,000 to be used for this purpose. Their first success was acquiring the property rights for the former Paschedag building on East Main Street, which had fallen into disrepair. That structure has been removed and the plan is to get the prominent location back onto the tax rolls.

A more recent success came when the city council voted Tuesday for funds to demolish two more. They are at 408 North Madison and 1308 East Oak. Both demolition contracts went to KPS, Inc. at $3,090 per structure.
